“As the incoming General President and on behalf of our Executive Board and 140,000 member-strong union, I am proud to support Liz Shuler as the next President of the AFL-CIO.  While the transition is sudden, there is no doubt she’s the right person to lead our movement. In moments like these, steady leadership is needed. Our movement needs a leader who is young, energetic, and experienced, and I am happy that Liz stepped up to do the job.

Since she was first elected Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO in 2009, Liz has shown herself to be an innovative and thoughtful leader. Her dedication to ensuring all workers – regardless of industry, race, gender, or age – have access to a union is exactly what is needed as we move forward together.

I also want to congratulate our friend and brother, Fred Redmond, on his election as Secretary-Treasurer. Fred is a respected leader and true believer in our movement. The new leadership team of Shuler, Redmond, and Gebre reflect the growing diversity of the US working class.

Liz’s guidance and friendship with the IUPAT for the many years we’ve worked together has been exceptional. She is best equipped to tackle the challenges ahead and I look forward to working alongside her for years to come.”
