IUPAT Celebrates the Nomination of Mayor Walsh for Labor Secretary

News

The IUPAT are thrilled that Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was nominated for US Secretary of Labor. Marty will bring his commitment to the labor movement straight to the halls of the Federal Government. If confirmed, he’ll be the first union member to serve as Labor Secretary in almost 50 years.

Over the course of his career, Marty worked his way up from an apprentice in Laborers’ Local Union 223 to the head of the Boston Metropolitan Building Trades Council and ultimately as the Mayor of Boston.

Marty’s tenure represents a commitment to elevating the priorities of working people and building strong, middle class communities. His service as Mayor of Boston has been defined by his advocacy for the working class. He stood with us on defending immigrant workers, ensured that projects built in the city of Boston were built by union workers, and has consistently been an unapologetic fighter for working people. He fights for working families and we firmly believe that if confirmed he will bring that fight to the Department of Labor.

The bottom line is that we believe there is no greater qualification for the job than to be a rank and file union member. The IUPAT looks forward to working with a Secretary of Labor who is not only an ally of the labor movement, but is from the labor movement, for years to come.
